You've just described a classic problem when children's book become movies ("too adult for children and too childish for adults"). Thank you for expressing it so succinctly.

The best thing about some of the suboptimal movie versions is that they can draw children to books either through the publicity or new movie tie-in editions that make them look fresh. I'm hoping that will happen with Lyle :).
