You're right. Aggressive hooks are overdone. I think a lot of it is coming from editors like the editors of mysteries who want the dead body to turn up in the first few pages.

You often have the sense that they're underestimating readers. But if editors reject, say, novels where a dead body doesn't turn up on the usual timetable, it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle.
