You're right. Luck has a vast amount to do with it. That can involve the perception that the market is "saturated" or not, and one book--by someone other than you--can make a difference there.

Who ever knows when a book will push all editors over the line, seemingly at once, and make them want to say, "I've read way too many proposals on this topic and can't bear to look at another"?
