You're right about how helpful "comps" (in publishing jargon) can be. You just have to be a bit careful with your language: It's a big turn-off for acquiring editors (which I've been at magazines and newspapers but not books) if your comparison comes across as delusional boasting instead of a thoughtful attempt to note similarities of, say, genre and plot, setting, etc.
