Your dad, perhaps unknowingly, identified a classic category of unreliable narrators. Those narrators don't just include liars, people with faulty memories, children too young to grasp what's going on, etc. They can also be insane or have other psychological problems that affect their ability to tell a trustworthy story. Give your dad an A in English on this one :).
