I loved Hampton Sides' "The Wide Wide Sea." And it has a slight military angle that might interest you as a veteran: It's about Captain Cook's effort to find a northwest passage, sponsored by the Admiralty in England. Cook had. to maintain military order and discipline on his ships, and he did it so well, he seems to have been revered by his men for most of his career.
