You describe a classic pattern I've heard many times in interviewing famous authors. They often say (not necessarily in these words) that the three stages of writing a book are, in order: infatuation, revulsion, and reconciliation. First you think that what you're writing is genius; then you're repelled by it; and finally you reconcile the two.
