You can admire Favre's accomplshments on the field (which the author clearly did) without loving him as a person. What often happens is: Biographers start out admiring their subjects, but detest them in the end, because the stars are so difficult to deal with. I've known biographers who ended up having to sue subjects who breached their contracts.
