You are so right. Book awards can reflect politics and also the economy.

Just as the Oscars can be affected by money the producers spend on advertising and promoting the films, literary prizes can sometimes be affected by expensive marketing campaigns (at least in that the $$$ spent can bring books to the attention of judges who might otherwise have overlooked them in the crush of candidates).
