You are so right about the quality control. That's been the big issue with self-publishing from the start and probably always will be.

Indie authors often say that self-published books can be as good as traditionally published, and they're right: Who'd argue that Beatrix Potter isn't as good as most of the children's book authors who've come after her? But finding the modern-day Potters is a challenge because so much dross surrounds them.
