You are so right about the prominence of these statues. Some are tucked away in old "Confederate cemeteries" that few people visit today.

But many stand in prominent positions such as a courthouse square, a bitter irony given how little justice black residents have often received at those courthouses. It's remarkable that some communities have fought even efforts to move those statues to a less visible spot.
