Yes! To my mind it shows how--even a century or more ago--marketing and self-promotion could affect how much writers earned.

When Stephen Crane's publisher told him he wasn't well known enough to rate an advance, it was basically saying to him, in more modern terms, "You're just not an influencer." Alas, poor Stephen.
