Yes! It startled me when I moved here that everyone, black or white, seemed to accept this. The film sheds some light on why.
Another recent film that might interest you is Descendant, which deals with a different aspect of the tortured racial history of Mobile: the descendants of what is sometimes called "the last slave ship in America" (because slavery had been outlawed in the U.S. by time the ship arrived from Africa).
