Yes. In another comment I responded to that issue of "you only hear about success stories" and its effects: It does make people judge themselves unfairly.

It also makes it hard for writers to know how to make good career decisions. News stories often focus on an author who succeeded only after years of rejection. But I can't remember ever having seen one on someone who didn't succeed after years of rejection.

That gap can leave the impression that if you work long and hard enough at writing, you inevitably will succeed eventually. But--for all kinds of reasons--that's not true.
