Wow. I’ve been a major @DavidPogue fan for years, but I had no idea he’d traveled last year on the Titan, the submersible that vanished while looking for the wreck of the Titanic.

A story on the Associated Press Top News feed, posted just before 3 p.m. EDT on June 20, quotes the CBS News journalist Pogue as saying Titan uses two communication systems: “text messages that go back and forth to a surface ship and safety pings that are emitted every 15 minutes to indicate that sub is still working.”

On the latest voyage of the Titan, both have stopped working. The AP quotes Pogue on the implications of that:

“There are only two things that could mean. Either they lost or power or the ship developed a hull breach and it imploded instantly. Both of these are devastatingly hopeless.”

The AP story goes on:

“The submersible had seven backup systems to return to the surface, including sandbags and lead pipes that drop off and an inflatable balloon. One system is designed to work even if everyone aboard is unconscious, Pogue said….
