With Faulkner it's probably easier to start with one of the short stories, such as "A Rose for Emily," which gives you a taste of Southern Gothic without leaving you hopelessly at sea as to what it's "about." That hair on the pillow at the end of "Emily" will stay with me forever, though I not a diehard Faulkner fan.
