We have purple martins that arrive and leave the Gulf Coast at about the same time, supposedly coming up from Central or South America.

My town has built a lot of what people call "purple martin condos" for them in the shallow waters of Mobile Bay. Each houses about a dozen birds and sits atop a post in the bay. The condos are picturesque, and it's a pleasure to watch the birds entering or leaving them.
