True, thanks. You can earn money before your advance is paid back (just not royalties) if your agent reserves certain rights for you.

Let's say your agent reserves "first serial rights" (which often means magazine or newspaper rights) and a publication pays to excerpt your book. Then you wouldn't have to wait for your advance to earn out to get the money--you'd get it up front. This has happened to me a few times.
