Timing is huge. The benefits of MFA programs seem to vary greatly with the quality of the program (though I don't have an MFA) and whether you get a teaching fellowship that will pay for it.

The top programs bring in agents and editors who have vastly helped some writers. But others may not be able to do that. Good luck with your decision!
