This kind of thing--the atomization of genres--is happening in books, too, and it has a lot to do with Amazon and its practice of subdividing books into ever-more-bizarre categories on the pretext of helping readers find work they'll like. If Amazon doesn't now have a category for "elevated horror" (and list where books, films, etc., rank in that category), I wouldn't be surprised to see it soon.
