This is true only of personal essays, if at all. Great essayists can and do structure essays in many other ways; political essays, for example, might be built on a theme rather than a key moment. A classic example is Henry David Thoreau's essay "Civil Disobedience," which argues that people shouldn't allow governments to overrule their individual consciences.
