This is one of those polarizing songs that some Southerners see as "happy" enough to have at weddings but that makes others cringe. I once booked a local band for an event and, before we'd even started going over the songs they'd do, the leader said, "We don't do 'Sweet Home Alabama.'" I wasn't going to propose it--but it seems he'd had enough requests to make a preemptive strike :).
