They do lend credibility, Philip. A review in the right publication can also get your book into more bookstores and libraries and be a credential that helps you get grants, awards, and certain types of jobs, such as academic teaching positions, among other benefits.

Thanks so much for recognizing their value. A sour-grapes factor may exist among people who disparage reviews by experienced critics: They couldn't get them, so they knock them.
