There's a lot of truth to that. It may date to a much earlier era when editors and publishers saw themselves as members of "a gentleman's profession" that didn't sully itself with crass activities like marketing.

They industry has been scrambling to catch up for years, but it's still far behind other businesses on that count. In fact, some say that the phrase "publishing business" is an oxymoron.
