The nuns truly could be brutal and, as you say, domineering. And that behavior can be hard to interpret because the schools, if affiliated with parishes, were under the thumb of the priests, who may have ordered punishments like ruler whacks.

Some of the nuns themselves were truly oppressed, and you have to wonder what they'd been like if they'd had more control over their own lives. They had a difficult life.
