The complete Sherlock Holmes is perfect! I've recommended it time and again to people anticipating near-equivalents of being stranded on an island: for example, to families going camping. For some reason I didn't think of it, though it might be way better for reading around a campfire than Cheever (maybe because I've so often suggested it to people going on vacation with children, not alone). You're making me think I may need to do a second list: Aesop and an encyclopedia would be great, too. I did think of including a good dictionary (either the OED or American Heritage) but skipped it because I worried that after the Bible and Shakepeare, my list might be too heavy on reference books.
