That's so interesting, Mick. Supporting your point: I've seen certain British writers praised as "great cricket writers," but I can't recall having seen one praised as a "great soccer writer." Or "a great rugby writer."

Another sport often cited as proof of the "Small Ball Theory" is golf. And I'd bet there's much more good British writing on golf than on soccer or cricket, as there is here in States.
