That's interesting, because they worked in such different styles (and genres). Maybe there's something in the mid-century male worldview that doesn't appeal to you?

I dislike Updike's novels, for example, but admire his essays and literary criticism for the New Yorker and his early short stories. And--with Bellow--I couldn't finish some of his longer novels but think his short Seize the Day is a masterpiece of American lit.
