That's a wonderful phrase with a very psychologically sophisticated idea behind it: "my past self has often acted incognito or covertly." You have to do something to make sure you don't forget it: write it down, bookmark this story, or do something else (unless your memory for your comments is way less porous than mine). You could write an entire essay on the idea of the disguises our past self can wear: We block out so much because it's too painful or difficult to remember.
