That's a great quote I hadn't heard, Kerry. I wouldn't be surprised if O'Brien had been thinking of it, given how familiar she must be with American lit after being so widely published here.

Writers can't be reminded too often that the things that they might feel embarrassed by or ashamed of--like poverty--can be your best material. O'Brien sounds like a wise teacher.
