That’s a fantastic story, David. I’ve always wondered why the Germans didn’t shoot Millin, and your explanation is the first I’ve heard that makes sense. It’s amazing that you worked with someone who saw Millin. He has become an almost mythic figure at this point. That Lovat also survived (for the reasons you say) is no less remarkable.

Another interesting thing about this story is: Did you notice that Millin isn’t wearing a kilt but trousers in the photo? That might be the first time I’ve ever seen a regimental piper NOT wearing a kilt when playing in his official role. I’d bet there’s an anecdote behind that.

One reason I enjoy working with @NoahFenster and @KevinAlexander is that they are open to offbeat stories like this in addition to album reviews. I’ve always wanted to write about Celtic music on The Riff but I’m less of a fan of groups like Celtic Woman than of more traditional pipe and fiddle music, so I was grateful for the chance to do this.
