That would interesting to find out. I didn't read the novel until well into adulthood. And I know my reaction differed from what it would have been had I read it as an adolescent.

Back then I might have read it as a straight adventure story or just a story for boys: All the subtleties of theme, setting, and character development might have been lost on me. In a way, I'm glad I waited until I could appreciate them fully.
