That was a fascinating era in literary history: the time when books were sold in advance through subscriptions (and Twain’s case is particularly interesting).

More recently, we had something similar in the heyday of book clubs like Book-of-the-Month and the Literary Guild. I wouldn’t be surprised if, if eventually, we see a variation on those for the digital age.
