That "no contractions in personal essays" idea has always struck me as bizarre. I mean, what if you use them in real life? Should you sound NOT like yourself? No writing teacher would advise that.

But I'd qualify your comment about fiction slightly by saying that you need contractions in fiction if you've created a character who would use them.
