Thanks, Sheila. Rossiter's argument interested me in part because she doesn't blame the blame pandemic.
I might have argued that romantic comedies are the ultimate date movies, and if theaters are shuttered and people aren't going there on dates, that might have affected the production of romcoms. Rossiter's explanations made more sense to me.
But I also think the death of Nora Ephron might have played a role, given that one writer can help to drive an entire genre, as Helen Fielding's "Bridget Jones's Diary" did with (oh, vile name) "chick lit" (which, interestingly, is also near-obsolete).
