Thanks, Sadie. I wrote this in part because Medium has members worldwide, who may not know that a lot of Americans (esp. journalists) see anonymous reviews as unethical. Or they may be unfamiliar with the mess those reviews have caused on Goodreads.

Book-review standards in the U.S. and U.K. are very different in some ways. But I follow some the best U.K. book-review venues (TLS, LRB, Guardian, Spectator, etc.). And although the standards differ, I've seen only one pseudonym ("John Self," the pen name a Northern Irish lawyer uses in U.K. pubs), which is fairly transparent because it's the name of a prominent Martin Amis character.

I wish Medium would set a few ground rules on this issue. Life could be so much easier for editors and writers alike if it said: This is OK, and this isn't.
