My sense that is religious people are making common cause with evangelicals, in part, because evangelicals make common cause with them. And not just in evangelicals' strong support for Israel.

My area has a lot of evangelical programming on radio and TV stations, and when those stations cover religious news, they don't just cover Christianity. They respect other faiths by, for example, covering the persecution of those faiths overseas, not just the persecution of Christians. So what you are saying makes perfect sense to me.
