My issue with leaving it to the editors on this one is that you can already see that some are pinning their own stories to the top of their pubs and pushing the others down much lower on the page.

I'd encourage anyone reading this (and who has the time) to keep track of editors who are continually featuring their own stories instead of members' and maybe do meta posts calling them out. All the financial and other incentives are for editors to choose to feature own stories.
