Thanks, Faye. I'm looking into this. I agree people shouldn't ascribe characters' views to authors. But here's the challenge in sorting it out: Many writers use in their novels their favorite lines from real life, or things they've said to friends or in an interview or elsewhere.

I'm a novelist who's done it; my novels have more than line I first said elsewhere. So the question becomes: Where was it said first? That a line is in a book doesn't mean the author didn't say it first elsewhere. I'm working on this one and will update the post if I can find the definitive answer. In any case, thanks again!
