Thanks, Betsy. I live in South Alabama, which like South Louisiana, is rich in armadillos that tear up backyards. And the idea that Betty might have acquired leprosy from one was credible to me: She said her family prided itself on its good housekeeping, and if that extended to, say, trying to clean up the mess armadillos make of yards, she could easily have had unsafe contact with one.
