Something similar happens here with Time magazine's "Person of the Year," though he or she is selected by the editors rather than popular vote. That seems fair to me.

What's interesting is the outrage over the choice of a female footballer: I can't recall a time when Time's Person of the Year had a similar effect. But that may mean only that people are still watching TV while not reading Time magazine.
