Shoe repair shops are disappearing, too, because people just throw away shoes that need repairing. Neither my town nor any near me has one.

You have to drive about 40 minutes to Mobile to a shoe-repair shop, leave your shoes, and return in a few days. The round-trip cost isn't worth it for a lot of people who have to add the cost of gas, city parking, and lost work time.
