This will be no consolation, but similar issues occured recently when Microsoft swallowed GoDaddy, with which I'd cohabited happily for 15+ years (including that the customer service went from superior to hellish). Your story was perversely comforting in that it showed me see how much worse it could have been. I'd think your experiences had occurred in, say, Albania, if I didn't know otherwise.
