Roy Peter Clark is great, especially his famous "Get the name of the dog" tip. I was mentoring a New School student when the book with that tip came out (I think it's Writing Tools) , and a student who'd just read it came up to me and said very earnestly, "He said if a dog is involved in a story, you should always get the name of the dog. Is that true?" I said, "Yes!"
