Right. Think of how many people believe that Shakespeare said "to the manor born" instead of "to the manner born."

I suspect the Didion quote is so popular precisely because most people don't understand it and therefore can read into it whatever they want. It's understandable, but slightly frustrating when Didion wrote so many things that are worthier of quoting.
