"Research" might be a better term. But to take your example of Native Americans, but it might still be hard for writers to do.

As an example, I live in a region with a lot of active, high-profile members of the Creek Nation. (A sensitivity reader wouldn't let you say "tribe" because it sounds too tribal, which the AP frowns on for similar reasons--although you can use "tribe" for, say, your family or your tribe of liberal hipster New York Democrats.) And--even after seeing a lot of TV commercials for the Creek Nation, which I believe wants to open a casino--I'd have no idea how to find a Creek who could vet a manuscript for insensitive references to the Nation, or who would even know what a publisher might look for.

It might be easier for a writer just to look for an editor who knows Associated Press style well (because the AP tends to be reasonably quick on the uptake of trends like these).
