Oh, I hope you can dig up some of those stories! My impression is that the D-Day casualty rate was so high, the percentage of soldiers who survived both Normandy and Italy was probably modest.
There's a movie with Robert Redford about securing the German bridges called, I believe, "The Bridge at Arnhem," based on a nonfiction book with the same title. It's not quite as good as the film of "The Longest Day," but I knew so little about those bridges your father was involved in building, I found it worth watching for that reason alone.
