Often critics underpraise the first books by a then-unknown author and then try to make up for it by overpraising a later one. That may have happened here, because I've heard his earlier books are better.

The problem is that if you're disappointed by a later book, you won't be motivated to go back to the others. It sounds as though that may be happening to you.
