My strategy is always to Google "Kirkus" and the title before reading a book, because Kirkus reviews almost everything and its reviews tend to be the most honest (though I freelance for Kirkus, so I'm not a neutral observer here). The two other major prepub review venues, PW and Library Journal/Booklist, are more boosterish.
