McFarlane was, essentially, pitching stories or books all his life, and he did have sales. The Depression seems to have been a huge factor in why he didn't take the approach you mention and pitch a series to compete with the Hardy Boys; as a young father he was perenially so desperate for cash, he didn't have the luxury of thumbing his nose at Stratemeyer, alas.
